Wick & Moon is a passion project developed as a continuation of my research on Asian packaging design. Inspired by the tradition of gifting mooncakes during Lunar New Year, I reimagined the mooncake as a scented candle and designed a reusable lantern package to house it, blending tradition, purpose, and beauty in one giftable experience. This project is both a personal exploration of how to create thoughtful packaging and an experiment in form, function, and cultural storytelling.
Wick & Moon
During Lunar New Year, mooncakes are gifted to family and friends in beautifully intricate boxes. I wanted to honor that tradition while also offering a dual-purpose product: a mooncake-shaped candle that can be lit inside the lantern it comes in. This project challenged both my creativity and resourcefulness. I learned how to build dielines that fit and fold correctly, prototyped multiple structures to fix sizing issues, and used a Cricut Maker 3 to cut components with precision. I also focused on minimizing waste by optimizing the layout and materials during the making process.
Throughout this process, I developed a deeper understanding of hands-on package design, including how to create effective dielines. It emphasized the importance of aligning design with function and became a small exploration of cultural appreciation through thoughtful, purpose-driven packaging.
